🌸 Materials I Use
Every piece I make is crafted from materials chosen for their strength, comfort and reliability. I work with paracord, Biothane, soft leather and secure Chicago screws — each selected because it performs beautifully in everyday use and still looks stylish.
This page explains what each material is, where it comes from, and why I trust it for my work.
🌸 What Is Paracord?
Paracord is a lightweight, woven nylon cord originally created for American paratroopers in the Second World War. After landing, soldiers would cut the cord from their parachutes and use it for repairs, tying equipment, building shelters and countless other tasks.
Because it proved so strong and versatile, paracord became popular outside the military too. Today it’s available in many colours and patterns.
Bracelets and Keychains: These are popular for their portability and the ability to quickly deploy the cord in an emergency.
Dog Collars: Dog Leads: Car Restraints; and lots more. Durable and customizable for your pets.
Zipper Pulls: Attach paracord to zippers on bags and tents to make them easier to find and use in the dark
Survival Tools: Paracord can be used to make bow drills for fire starting, snares, and even improvised fishing line.
🌸 What Is Biothane?
Biothane is a modern, vegan alternative to leather. It has a strong webbing core coated in a smooth, waterproof polymer, making it incredibly practical and long‑lasting.
Why I use Biothane:
Doesn’t absorb smell
Easy to wipe clean
It pairs beautifully with paracord for collars, leads and accessories that need both structure and comfort.
Waterproof and mud‑proof
Strong and durable
Flexible in all weather
🌸 Soft Leather
I also use soft, high‑quality leather for certain designs where a natural, flexible material is the best choice. Leather adds a warm, traditional feel and becomes even softer with use.
Why I use soft leather:
•Comfortable against the skin • Naturally flexible
•Long‑lasting when cared for • Has a classic, timeless look
It’s perfect for accents, trims and pieces that benefit from a gentle, natural finish. It blends beautifully with paracord and Biothane, adding a soft, polished look without the hardness of traditional leather.
🌸 Webbing Webbing is a strong, woven material used as the internal structure for certain pieces. It adds stability without adding bulk, and it’s brilliant for items that need to hold their shape while still being comfortable.
Why I use webbing:
•Strong and supportive • Lightweight
•Flexible but structured • Helps pieces keep their shape
•Ideal as a core inside paracord or faux leather designs
It’s one of those “hidden hero” materials — you don’t always see it, but it makes everything feel secure and well‑made.
🌸 Chicago Screws
Chicago screws are small, two‑part metal fasteners that hold materials securely without stitching. They give a clean, professional finish.
Why I use Chicago screws:
Strong and reliable
Easy to tighten
Replaceable if needed
Clean polished appearance
Ideal for Biothane and faux leather connections
They’re one of the most secure fastening methods for handcrafted collars and accessories.
🌸 Grosgrain Ribbon
Grosgrain ribbon is a soft, ribbed ribbon with a matte finish. It’s often used as a decorative layer or lining because it’s gentle, flexible and adds a lovely texture.
Why I use grosgrain ribbon:
•Soft and comfortable •Adds colour and texture
•Lightweight •Helps prevent rubbing
•Perfect for lining or decorative accents
It gives a polished, boutique finish without adding weight.
